About
Dhafer Youssef is a visionary oud master, singer, and composer whose music transcends boundaries and brings genres together. Raised in a family of muezzins, he discovered his vocal potential through Quranic chanting and early experiments with sound in his village. He was introduced to the oud at an early age and was influenced by contemporary grooves; he continued his musical education in Tunis and Vienna, where jazz, Indian music, and multicultural influences shaped his distinctive style.
Since the release of his debut album Malak (1999), he has combined Mediterranean traditions with jazz, electronics, and global sounds, creating highly acclaimed works such as Electric Sufi, Digital Prophecy, Divine Shadows, Abu Nawas Rhapsody, and Birds Requiem. A celebrated collaborator, Youssef has performed with artists including Nguyên Lê, Paolo Fresu, Zakir Hussain, and Dave Holland, and has composed film music for Black Gold and The Amazing Spider-Man.
Renowned for his innovative approach to the oud and the human voice, Youssef is celebrated as a leading figure in contemporary music. He seamlessly bridges Eastern and Western traditions while redefining the possibilities of his instrument.
