About
The trio around the composer and pianist Julia Kadel is already looking at a moving History back: It‘s first two albums brought it in 2014 and 2016 at the legendary Label Blue Note/Universal, which caused a great media response. In 2013 the trio won the HFM Jazz Prize, in 2015 Kadel and her trio were awarded the Echo Jazz twice nominated as Instrumentalist of the Year (national) and the trio as Newcomer of the Annual.
This was followed by numerous national and international concerts in countries such as Hungary, France and Norway as well as concerts at the Hamburg Überjazz Festival Kampnagel, at NDR and Philharmonie Essen. In 2018, the trio was one of the few acts, who performed at the exclusive Piano Day Festival at the Elbphilharmonie. In the same year portrayed the Jazzthing Kadel as one of the 10 German ›Tasten Top Ten‹ in the frame of the ›new German jazz piano miracle‹.
The trio then recorded their third album ›Kaskaden‹ on the German jazz label MPS, in the legendary analogue Black Forest studio. Thus, the traditional label had brought a new act on board who did not feel obliged to take the big name on board to emulate jazz history, but to stand completely in the present. Dynamic, unconventional and authentic. The trio also received a tailwind from a scholarship from the Initiative Musik, which supported the trio in 2019. ›Cascades‹ was not only recorded analogously, but also in a place that could not be more suitable. A place that may be a small sensation for some MPS fans, as the Recordings of the Julia Kadel Trio after 37 years the first production of the label in the historic MPS studio in the Black Forest. An event about which Spiegel Online also reported in an article.
Since autumn 2020 Kadel plays with the American drummer Devin Gray and new to the trio is bass player Athina Kontou. With this, the trio swings new to new sound horizons with characteristic repertoire and an open, curious spirit that the three strong musical personalities on multidimensional allows layers to work together. Most recently, they were at the Grillo Theatre in Essen for as Kadel awarded the Jazz Pott 2020 for her innovative artistic work as well as at the Heidelberg Enjoy Jazz Festival. A fourth album is planned. The fans of the trio can already focus on the further development of Kadels multiharmonically research-based ideas and improvisations that work together in this new trio.

“In a time of streamlined productions, this disc is a clear, refreshing mountain stream.”

“(…) hardly ever a pianist sounded so cool in the sense of cold, so courageously modern and close to the dissonance.”
– Bayrischer Rundfunk, DE
“Lyrical moods, rather open passages and energetic expressions alternate, onomatopoeic abstractions, for example by direct grips into the interior of the grand piano are performed live even more pleasurable and with lots of love for detail.”
– FAZ, DE
“Just as the fancy takes her, Kadel makes use of the convenience store of sounds, styles and eras, mixes authentic emotions with stupendous technology (…). The musicians do not act as soloists but merge into one collective instrument. And the sound is sheer poetry!”
