Johanna Amelie is an indie artist and music producer from Berlin.
Even as a teenager Johanna Amelie couldn’t keep her hands off any instrument. She learned violin, viola, saxophone, piano and flute at the same time and when a Regina Spektor CD fell into her hands at the age of 17, the matter was clear:
She was going to become a singer-songwriter, making music her career.
She started writing songs, studied music production and took singing lessons with Jocelyn B Smith. Today, she performs internationally with her band or solo, and plays various keyboards, guitars or omnichord on stage while singing.
In collaboration with renowned producers* such as Gordon Raphael or Andy Chatterley, Johanna Amelie released since 2014, two albums and three eps. The third studio album is currently being recorded and will be released in May 2022.
Johanna Amelie also makes her own music videos with a collective consisting of friends and colleagues.
The current album BEGINNINGS was released in September 2020.
During the lockdown, J.A. produced new songs together with Hamburg artist Lùisa and Berlin producers* Mirna Stanic and Johannes Wehrle. Represented are her bandmate Fabian Stevens as well as guest musicians* such as Alin Coen, Moritz Krämer, Tristan Brusch and Matze Pröllochs.
The album songs about the magic of upheavals and beginnings sound spherical, haunting and yet always intimate in their size and complexity. Their thematic thread here is the buoyancy that comes in phases of life when something great ends and something new, as yet unknown, begins.
“A poetic feeling is woven into these songs, curiously arranged, further unfolding Amelie’s personality as a musician.” – ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE
2021: NEW BEGINNINGS
In 2021, some of the album songs from BEGINNINGS were reworked and remixed with artists such as Pola Roy (Wir sind Helden), Simeon Cöster (Isolation Berlin) and Tutti Bounce (of SEEED). This resulted in the EP: NEW BEGINNINGS.
Johanna Amelie: “Since the tour for my album BEGINNINGS was postponed for 1.5 years, I was missing something. Although many new doors opened for me during the lockdown and music was my constant companion, I sorely missed playing with other musicians. That’s how the idea for the “Remix EP” was born. The new music influences from House to Reggae to Trip Hop show the songs again in a completely different light. It’s incredibly exciting for me to have gotten to know and love so many new production approaches for my songs.”
The heart of the music project is traveling and performing:
Johanna Amelie earned herself an international and ever-growing fanbase in recent years with over 300 – partly self-organized – performances throughout Europe, as well as on tours in Ghana and New Zealand, and opening for Die höchste Eisenbahn, Niels Frevert, Andy Shauf (and many more).
The musician does not see herself as a lone fighter, but as part of a lively scene. In addition to her work as an active musician, she is committed to the visibility of women* in the industry as a member of Music Women* Germany and founded the Community Visibility Breakfast, a group that promotes exchange between Berlin-based female artists*.
“A poetic feeling is woven into these songs.”

“Take a listen, let go and allow yourself to be carried away by the dreamy soundscapes served up so handsomely by a musician who obviously has a huge future ahead of her. On this evidence, Johanna Amelie is going to be around for many, many years to come; truly lovely stuff.”
“Fitting seamlessly between Julia Holter, Regina Spektor and Sharon Van Etten, the much-underrated singer-songwriter from Berlin looks destined for bigger things with her new release.”
– Fame Magazine, UK
“Johanna Amelie takes herself and the world around her apart to ultimately put it back together into a shape of music we haven’t yet heard.“

“One thing’s for sure: With haunting ballads such as Being, Johanna Amelie is setting out on a brighter future and will certainly be on our watch.“
